Sometimes opportunities come along that will never be repeated again. This photograph is a testimony to that fact. This greyscale photograph was processed in Photoshop. The image was digitally modified only slightly from the original color photograph. The background was dropped out, but the image itself remains largely untouched. The swan was one of my Trumpeters, the largest of all waterfowl, who was recovering from near death because of a deadly infection common among migratory waterfowl. During her initial recovery she lived in my downstairs bathroom for 4 months. In spite of her 7 foot wing span she adjusted surprisingly well to this odd environment. Because a seconday infection was located in her throat she was unable to bend her neck backwards and tuck her head under her wing for weeks. She laid on the floor with her 3 foot neck stretched out in front of her, and her wings drooping. It was a very sad sight. I spent hours feeding her, talking to her and keeping her company. I was thrilled when I walked into the bathroom and found that she was once again recovered enough to sleep in her characteristic graceful repose. I took this photograph in honor of her incredibly beautiful presence. |
